Protected Trees

If you live in one of the local conservation areas, you will need to get permission to carry out any tree work or tree removals.

Likewise, you may not live in a conservation area but have a tree that is under a Tree Protection Order (TPO), again you would need to get permission for work to be carried out on the listed tree.

We offer expert advice on these matters and will happily make the application submissions for you (upon quote acceptance).

Trees within conservation areas

In conservation areas, notice is required for works to trees that have a trunk diameter of more than 75mm when measured at 1.5m from ground level (or more than 100mm if reducing the number of trees to benefit the growth of other trees).

You have to give your local planning authority six weeks’ notice before carrying out work on trees which are located in a conservation area but are not yet the subject of a tree preservation order. This gives the authority an opportunity to consider whether an order should be made to protect the trees.

Tree Preservation Orders

A Tree Preservation Order is an order made by a local planning authority in England to protect specific trees, groups of trees or woodlands in the interests of amenity.

An Order prohibits the cutting down, topping, lopping, uprooting, wilful damage or wilful destruction of trees without the local planning authority’s written consent. If consent is given, it can be subject to conditions which have to be followed. The cutting of roots is also a prohibited activity and requires the authority’s consent.

Our tree report service provides detailed, professional assessments of your trees, including their health, structure and safety. We identify potential risks, recommend appropriate care or maintenance and deliver clear reports to help you make informed decisions about your outdoor space.
